In dermatology, lasers are used regularly to achieve amazing results and are routinely used for treatments of the skin. The word “laser” stands for “Light Amplification of Stimulated Emitted Radiation.” The devices that administer laser treatment are cleared by the FDA and regularly used at Associates in Dermatology. We provide Westlake patients treatments that can enhance their skin with the use of laser wavelengths. Laser skin treatments are growing in popularity due to their safety, effectiveness, and affordability.
This highly advanced technology is used to offer outpatient treatments of the skin with or without anesthetics. Below are some of the laser therapies used at Associates in Dermatology, Westlake:
- Carbon dioxide laser – the carbon dioxide laser emits a wavelength of 10,600nm, which is considered “invisible light.” This device can be used as a scalpel and delivers continuous or pulsed light in tiny pixels. This device treats rhinophyma, ingrown toenails, hidradenitis suppurativa, Darier’s disease, and warts.
- Gentle Max laser – The Gentle Max laser is two lasers. The first, Nd-YAG, offers laser hair removal. It administers a wavelength of 1064nm and transmits to the hair follicles to remove the hair permanently. The second laser, the Alexandrite laser, has a 755nm wavelength and can be used to treat certain skin cancers or remove tattoos.
- Tunable “Pulsed” dye laser – this laser emits a 595nm wavelength. It is designed to interact with the red color that is found in red blood cells, so it is best utilized to treat red spots on the skin, spider veins in the legs, or port wine hemangiomas on the face or body.
- Intense pulsed light – last is the intense pulsed light laser, or “IPL.” IPL treatment can be adjusted to treat pigmentation irregularities, superficial blood vessels on the face, or to freshen the skin’s surface easily. This treatment is less aggressive than other laser therapies and may be best for patients who are unable to schedule extended downtime and healing.
