What are neuromodulators?
This injectable, aesthetic treatment category is best known by the brand name, Botox®. However, since Botox® was first approved by the FDA in the early 2000s, other neuromodulators have been introduced. They include Dysport® and Jeuveau®. When injected precisely, these products soften the expression lines that make you look tired, angry, and older than your actual age.
How do neuromodulators work?
Nerve cells release a chemical called acetylcholine, which causes the muscles to contract. These muscle contractions are responsible for frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions. Neuromodulators like Botox® are formulated with a type of botulinum toxin Type A. This active ingredient stops the release of acetylcholine. When the chemical is not released, the underlying muscles do not contract. They remain relaxed. The overlying skin stays smooth, and etched-in lines and wrinkles on the surface are softened.
